Chapter Nine

If the full parking lot was a sign, blues loving patrons filled The Blue Delta Lounge. The twenty-dollar cover charge to enjoy the live music hadn’t scared off many people. After Liam paid for our group, we extended our hands for a stamp. A little blue music note marked the back of our left hands which allowed us to step outside and reenter without paying another cover fee.

I spun in a slow circle to take in my surroundings. “Wow. This place is awesome.”

It was dimly lit by the light coming from the stage and small candles on the tables. Posters of blues legends decorated the exposed brick walls. On the small stage was an older Black man in a dark blue suit, matching fedora, and a harmonica around his neck sitting on a stool. I could only assume he was Max Miller as advertised on the board outside the bar. He was playing what Philip explained was a resonator guitar. The musician’s fingers moved fast to create a rich, soulful sound that pulsed through the room.

The customers were sitting at small round tables in front of the stage or cuddled in intimate booths around the perimeter. No matter where they sat, they kept their voices low, letting the music shine through.

The bar had a polished black granite countertop and black leather stools full of beautifully dressed patrons. Behind the bar was a slender young woman with a brilliant smile and a hefty middle-aged man. They poured drinks while swaying to the music or sharing a whispered conversation with the wait staff or customers. Bottles of bourbon and scotch and other spirits lined the shelves behind them, sparkling in the dim light.

The energy in the room was intimate, almost sensual. The musician was clearly passionate about the music he played. His love for it came through in spades, captivating the audience. It was a place for people to put aside their problems, to let themselves get lost in the music and forget about life for a while. The music, the décor, everything about the place made it feel like we’d stepped through a portal to another dimension.

I instantly fell in love with the place.

I hooked my arm through Stella’s. “Hey Stell, let’s go show the bartenders a picture of Bruno. Maybe they’ll recognize him.”

We fit ourselves in a gap between two barstools. The middle-aged man noticed Stella right away.

His lips parted into a smile. “Well, hello there, what can I do for you?”

“Hi,” Stella said in a low but sunny voice. “I’m hoping you can help me find a friend of mine.” She held up her phone so he could see the photo of Bruno.

“Ah, Bruno,” the man said. “Yeah, he comes in almost every night.” He glanced at his watch. “Should be here soon. You’re welcome to wait around for him. What’re y’all drinking?” He winked at Stella. “On the house.”

She beamed at him in a way that would have any man fall to his knees. “Thank you. I’ll have a glass of your house red, please.
